Program Overview


The Newborn and Infant Physical Examinations (NIPE) - Level 6 program at King's College London equips qualified midwives with the knowledge and skills to perform comprehensive NIPE examinations, identify potential complications, and communicate effectively with families. The program includes lectures, workshops, and clinical practice sessions, and is assessed through an MCQ exam, OSCE, and Clinical Assessment Document. Graduates are well-prepared for roles as midwives in various healthcare settings and for further specialization in neonatal care or advanced midwifery practice.

Program Outline


Degree Overview:

  • Perform a comprehensive NIPE, including morphological, cardiac, abdominal, skeletal, and neurological examinations.
  • Identify potential complications and additional care needs in newborns.
  • Build strong relationships with families and communicate effectively with them about their newborn's health.
  • Uphold professional standards and ethics in midwifery practice.
  • Recording NIPE findings in the S4N IT system and "Red Book" documentation.
  • Morphological examination, including cleft palate and congenital abnormalities.
  • Cardiac examination using stethoscope, palpating for thrills, heaves, and pulses.
  • Abdominal examination, palpating organs and identifying potential issues.
  • Identifying and managing neonatal jaundice.
  • Examining the skeletal system, including Ortolani and Barlow's tests for hip dysplasia.
  • Recognizing rashes and birthmarks.
  • Performing a neurological examination, including assessing Moro reflex.
  • Gestational assessment.
  • Neonatal sepsis.
  • Neonatal thermoregulation and glucose metabolism.
  • Communicating difficult news to families.
  • Duration: Term 3 - 24 April 2024 to 5 June 2024.
  • Teaching Schedule: 7 weekly sessions on Wednesdays.
  • Assessment: MCQ exam, OSCE, Clinical Assessment Document.

  • MCQ exam: Assesses knowledge and understanding of NIPE procedures and principles.
  • OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination): Assesses practical skills in performing a NIPE.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:


For both EU home students and international overseas students outside the EU:

  • Applicants must be a registered midwife in the UK
  • Applicants who are midwifery students in their final year, who are due to qualify in the academic year 2023/2024, are also able to apply
  • Applicants must secure the support from their employer/NHS Trust before applying for this course.
  • Specifically, securing mentorship for undertaking NIPE examinations is critical. Accepted qualifications are:
  • IELTS: minimum of 7.0 overall, with nothing less than 6.5 in each component
  • TOEFL iBT: minimum of 100 overall with a minimum of 24 in each component
  • PTE: minimum of 70 overall with no less than 62 in each component.
  • CAE: minimum of 185 overall with no less than 176 in each component
  • CPE: minimum of 185 overall with no less than 176 in each component

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • The required English language proficiency score for this program is:
  • IELTS: minimum of 7.0 overall, with nothing less than 6.5 in each component.
