The program is structured around two main themes:

Developing Specialist Subject Knowledge:

• Students will develop their subject teaching skills using diverse methodologies and media to engage young learners.
• The program emphasizes understanding the Art and Design curriculum, learner progress in Art, planning and curriculum development, examination requirements, inclusion issues in Art and Design, and auditing and developing subject-specific knowledge for effective Art teaching.

Supporting Learning and Progress in the Secondary School:

• Students will prepare for the classroom by developing their teaching skills and understanding how to cater to the needs of all learners.
• The program covers topics such as how young people learn, teaching and learning techniques to support pupil progress, behavior management, assessment, inclusive, creative, and innovative teaching methods, and lesson and sequence planning.
• Students will research evidence-based learning theories, gain insights into current professional issues in secondary schools, and begin developing their own educational philosophy.

Modules:

• Developing Specialist Subject Knowledge: This module focuses on developing subject content and pedagogical knowledge for effective teaching in the specialist subject area.
Students will analyze and evaluate current research, policy, and practice, and develop specific teaching strategies to support pupil progress. Assessment involves submitting a critical account of the subject's place in the curriculum and evidence of successful teaching in the specialist subject.
• Pedagogies for Support Learning and Progress in the Secondary School: This module explores pedagogy, focusing on how pupils learn, supporting their progress, planning and teaching well-structured lessons, and adapting teaching to meet diverse learner needs.
Assessment involves planning and teaching a sequence of lessons with a focus on meeting the needs of all learners and critically evaluating the impact on pupil learning and outcomes.
• Professional Values and Practice 1: This module supports professional learning in the first assessed phase of school-based training.
It develops theoretical knowledge, understanding, attributes, values, and skills. Students will gain an understanding of teachers' statutory duties, professional expectations, and responsibilities. They will develop classroom and behavior management skills and build confidence as a teacher, focusing on creating a positive learning environment and setting high expectations for pupil learning and behavior. Assessment involves critically evaluating how developing skills impact pupil learning and progress.
• Professional Values and Practice 2: This module supports professional learning in the second assessed phase of school-based training.
It focuses on developing inclusive pedagogy and practice. Assessment involves critically evaluating how developing skills impact pupil learning and progress.
• Professional Values and Practice 3: This module supports professional learning in the final assessed phase of school-based training.
It consolidates understanding of teachers' professional accountability for pupil progress and outcomes, and the role of teachers within the school community and society. Students will refine and consolidate their teaching practice and demonstrate meeting the requirements for Qualified Teacher Status. Assessment involves critically evaluating how skills related to each standard have impacted pupil progress over time.

Teaching:

• Teaching methods include workshops, tutorials, lectures (some with guest speakers), and group work with other trainee teachers.
• Course tutors are experienced teachers, and students have a personal academic tutor for support.

Careers:

• Upon successful completion of the program, students will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), enabling them to begin their teaching career in a secondary school setting.
• The program prepares students to teach pupils in the 11-16 age range.
• Students will undertake at least two compulsory placements as part of the course, spending 120 days in at least two schools.
• Students will benefit from observing experienced teachers, practical hands-on experience, and supportive mentoring to develop into confident and successful teachers.
• Students will experience the wider role of a teacher in secondary education.
• Students will have the support of both subject and professional mentors in schools who will help them develop their practice through observations, planning meetings, weekly tutorials, reports, and in-depth lesson evaluations.
• University tutors will visit students in school to guide, support, and evaluate their progress.
• The program offers opportunities to continue postgraduate studies with a Master's degree in Education.
• The University has an extensive professional network, offering access to a wide range of high-quality placement providers, including local authorities, schools, colleges, early years settings, voluntary organizations, youth services, and youth offending teams.
• The placements team provides support in finding and navigating placements.

The full-time tuition fee for this course for 2024/25 entry will be £9250.
