Program Overview
About the research degree
The Masters of Enterprise (MEnt) programme allows you to undertake a one year research degree. It contains little or no formal taught component. This type of study gives you the chance to explore a research topic over a shorter time than a more in-depth doctoral programme.
It is ideal for individuals wishing to explore a potential business or social enterprise idea, either to start-up their own business or for a new venture within public- or private-sector organisations. The emphasis will be on enterprise creation and personal entrepreneurial development within the chosen area, rather than on the study of business organisations.
This one year programme of research will culminate in the production of a large-scale piece of written work in the form of a research thesis that should not normally exceed 15,000 words.
On graduation, you will have acquired entrepreneurial knowledge, behaviors, and skills with the ability to use research to develop and underpin your ideas. Depending on your research project, you will be in a position to take a new service or product to market; increase your likelihood of success in business, social enterprise, or self-employment; and have a better understanding of issues impacting on enterprise activity related to your area of research.

Entry requirements
The normal entry requirements for enrolment on the MEnt are an upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a UK university or a qualification of an equivalent standard, in a discipline appropriate to that of the proposed programme to be followed.
Since 31 March 2009 most international students coming to study in the UK have been required to apply for a visa under the new Points Based System, Tier 4. However, this visa type explicitly excludes self-employment and trading in the UK. We are therefore unable to accept applications for Masters of Enterprise or Enterprise Doctorate study from international students where their research is likely to include an element of UK based trading.
If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent. Read more about the University’s entry requirements for students outside of the UK on our Where are you from information pages.
