Advanced Robotics MSc
Degree Overview:
This MSc programme explores revolutionary developments in the field of robotics, one of the fastest growing industries in the world. The program’s central component is the extended research project, offering you the opportunity to publish your research and build a career profile through theoretical and practical work at the Centre for Advanced Robotics. Developed advanced practical skills in the design, implementation, analysis and evaluation of real-world robotic systems. Demonstrated skills in independent research, including the ability to formulate a research question, design a research methodology, carry out data analysis and present research findings both orally and in written form through a dissertation. Developed effective communication, project management and team working skills.
Outline:
The MSc is closely aligned with The Centre for Advanced Robotics at Queen Mary (ARQ), which specialises in subjects such as human-machine interaction, perception, design and mechatronics, drones, and AI and cognition. ARQ provides students with access to high-quality research facilities, including robotics laboratories, robotics platforms, and other technical equipment. The program consists of four compulsory modules, two elective modules , and an extended research project.
Compulsory modules:
- Modern Robotics: Fundamentals and Applications
- It also provides an understanding of kinematics, dynamics and trajectory planning of robotic manipulators, actuators and sensors, principles and roles in robotics. It introduces various aspects of robot modelling and control and problems encountered in robot programming and their remedies.
- Extended Research Project
- The module is an intensive research module that spans all three MSc semesters. It draws together the knowledge and skills from the taught component to address a research challenge of significant scope to be undertaken independently, under supervision. It focuses on the technical, project management and communication skills needed to successfully execute academic- and/or industry-oriented research. The project entails to apply research methods to solve original problems of fundamental or applied nature.
- Mechatronics It integrates the themes of signal theory, metrology, sensing & transduction, signal acquisition and conditioning for further processing, analysis, characterisation and design of sensing electronic systems, system-level considerations and sensor data analysis techniques. The knowledge and skills developed through this module are essential for any student engaging in the design of systems which extract signals from, or interact with the real world, and are highly relevant to electronic engineers designing, testing and using sensing systems and applications.
- Cognitive Robotics
- This module addresses the emerging field of autonomous systems possessing artificial reasoning skills and also environment and context awareness. The module will introduce students to advance numerical and computational techniques associated with machine learning and artificial intelligence. Successfully-applied algorithms and autonomy models form the basis for study, and provide students an opportunity to design such a system as part of their coursework project.
Elective modules
You will be assigned an Academic Advisor who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary. There are also a number of ways you can fund your postgraduate degree. Queen Mary alumni can get a £1000, 10%, or 20% discount on their fees depending on the programme of study. Find out more about the Alumni Loyalty Award. There are a number of ways you can fund your postgraduate degree.
