Degree Overview:

The European Law LLM is a challenging and intensive postgraduate program designed to provide you with an in-depth understanding of European law theory. You will gain an advanced international and comparative approach, with exposure to crucial practical issues including constitutional law, the law relating to the single market, competition law, environmental law and employment law. The program aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in a career in law. You will develop a thorough understanding of the EU legal system and its interaction with national legal systems. You will also acquire expertise in a particular area of European law through your dissertation.


Outline:

The European Law LLM is a full-year program with a modular structure. You are required to complete 180 credits in total, consisting of:

  • Full year program:
  • 150 credits of taught modules
  • 30 credits by dissertation of 10,000 words
  • Part-time program:
  • 90 credits of taught modules in year one
  • 60 credits by dissertation of 10,000 words in year two
  • Taught modules are typically delivered over ten weeks, with two hours of teaching per week. The program offers a variety of modules covering a wide range of topics in European law, including:
  • Constitutional Law: This module explores the constitutional foundations of the European Union, including the distribution of competences between the EU and its member states, the protection of fundamental rights, and the role of the European Court of Justice.
  • The Law Relating to the Single Market: This module examines the rules governing the free movement of goods, persons, services, and capital within the EU.
  • It also considers the role of competition law in ensuring a level playing field for businesses operating in the single market. It also explores the role of the European Commission and the national competition authorities in enforcing competition law.
