Program Overview


The International Finance Law PGDip is a two-semester program that provides students with a deep understanding of the legal and regulatory framework governing international finance transactions. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in international law firms, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies. Students take four compulsory core modules and select the remaining modules from a range of optional modules offered by the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS).

Degree Overview

The International Finance Law PGDip is a unique opportunity for law students from the University of Gothenburg and the University of Bergen to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in International Finance Law from Queen Mary’s Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). This is a two-semester program of intensive study that provides students with a deep understanding of the legal and regulatory framework governing international finance transactions. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in international law firms, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies. It offers a comprehensive examination of the key principles of international finance law, including banking and finance, capital markets, and international monetary law. Students will also gain practical experience by participating in moot court exercises and simulations.

  • Students take four compulsory core modules:

  • The remaining modules (up to eight) are selected from a range of optional modules offered by the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). The specific modules available may vary from year to year. Each module is worth 15 credits, except for the Advanced Seminar and the Independent Research Paper which are worth 30 credits each. Modules currently offered by the CCLS include:

Assessment

In this program, a mixture of formal examinations and coursework are used to assess the modules. Some modules may also incorporate additional forms of assessment. Students complete a 10,000-word dissertation (or equivalent) by the end of the program. Students receive feedback regularly as part of the formative/ continuous assessment processes as well as summative feedback after completion of the modules. The program encourages informed discussion around relevant current international finance law issues.


Teaching

The CCLS has an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The program is taught by a team of internationally renowned academics and practitioners who are experts in their fields. Guest speakers with practical experience in international finance law will also regularly contribute to the program. Each module is taught over a period of ten weeks and includes a mixture of lectures, seminars, and workshops. Guest speakers also provide insights into the practical application of international finance law.


Careers

The International Finance Law PGDip program prepares students for a variety of careers in international law firms, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies. Graduates of the program have gone on to work in leading law firms such as Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. They have also secured positions in major financial institutions such as HSBC, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley. Others have found employment in regulatory bodies such as the Bank of England, the Financial Conduct Authority, and the European Central Bank.
