Program Overview


This Postgraduate Certificate in International Finance Law provides students with a comprehensive understanding of international finance and insolvency law.   • Equip graduates for successful careers within domestic and international institutions, NGOs, or independent legal practices focusing on finance law.
  • The International Finance Law PGCert is delivered through rigorous postgraduate-level teaching, incorporating the expertise and practical insights of renowned academics and practitioners:
  • Prof George Walker – Barrister and author, leading authority on areas like international banking, bankruptcy, and international monetary law.
  • Dr Gabriel Gari – Reader in International Economic Law, expertise in trade law at various international institutions and universities.
  • Prof Rosa Maria Lastra – Sir John Lubbock Chair in Banking Law, research on financial law, regulations, and central banking, economic and international law, and EU Law.
  • Prof Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal – Professor of Banking and Finance Law, expertise in international finance (insolvency, banking supervision) and contract law.
  • Dr Costanza Russo – Senior Lecturer, research in cross-border bank insolvency and international banking, corporate and commercial law, with experience as both a corporate and commercial lawyer and academic.

Between two to four modules will be selected by Queen Mary students:

  • Law of International Banking
  • Law and Banking Crises
  • International Financial Institutions and Capital Market Regulatory Frameworks
  • Dispute Resolution in Global Finance

Two modules at Bergen/ Stockholm will be a mandatory part:

  • The International Law Aspects Of Finance II
  • The Law Of Finance At The National And Regulatory Levels
  • Law of International Banking: Provides an in-depth analysis of international standards and regulations governing international loans, guarantees, credit derivatives, and other important instruments used in the global banking system.
  • Law and Banking Crises: Explores complex legal and policy questions arising in response to systemic banking crises and explores potential solutions for international financial stability and crisis resolution mechanisms.
  • International Financial Institutions and Capital Market Regulatory Frameworks: Examines the structure and regulatory frameworks governing essential international financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and various regulatory bodies, including analysis of relevant international treaties, policy decisions, and contemporary challenges in a global context.
  • Dispute Resolution in Global Finance: Equips students with a thorough understanding of varied methods for dispute resolution in international financial transactions, including international arbitration and its diverse procedures, alongside other relevant mechanisms pertinent to the global sphere.
  • The International Law Aspects Of Finance II: Focuses primarily on sovereign debt restructuring, including relevant international law, contractual approaches, collective action clauses and related financial stability instruments, and the application of these in sovereign debt crises and restructuring processes worldwide.

Teaching: Seminars enable the exploration and expansion of learning through vibrant exchange and analysis.


Careers: Equipped with a specialized skill set covering various areas in finance law and insolvency, graduates are prepared for demanding careers at various levels across international organizations, NGOs, or as part of domestic and international law practices specializing in finance law work.
