The DClinDent in Minimally Invasive Dentistry is a unique UK program that equips dental professionals with advanced knowledge and skills in minimally invasive treatments. Through clinical training, scientific research, and a dissertation, students develop expertise in diagnosing and managing dental diseases using the latest techniques. Minimally Invasive Dentistry DClinDent


This DClinDent programme is unique in the UK and will expand your knowledge and skills in minimally invasive dentistry and provide an excellent preparation for your career as a dentist with a special interest in minimally invasive dentistry.

The programme of study will be in line with the General Dental Council curriculum for Clinical Dentistry including selected components of Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, Paediatric dentistry and Orthodontics. The aim is to equip you with:

  • The knowledge to diagnose and manage dental diseases using the most appropriate minimally invasive treatment.
  • Advanced skills to manage patients in the clinical environment, and the scientific skills needed to appraise research evidence and conduct research studies.
  • Ethical problem-solving and decision-making skills to enable the delivery of high-quality patient-centred care.

Outline:

The DClinDent degree is delivered through the following elements:


Clinical training

  • Two years full-time, including three days a week in a clinical environment under close specialist supervision
  • Covers all areas of clinical dentistry with an emphasis on minimally invasive procedures
  • Regular feedback from a dedicated Clinical Supervisor

Scientific research training


Year 1

  • Module: Research I: Research Project Progression Report I and Clinical Portfolio Initial Report
  • The module covers aspects of research methodology, ethics and other transferable skills to ensure that all students possess the fundamental level of knowledge and skills required to study the advanced level 8 modules in MID.
  • This fundamental knowledge and skills provides the underpinning building blocks to be developed over the following two years of clinical training and practice.
  • This is to develop a critical awareness and theoretical understanding of MID.
  • Module: Research II - Research Project Progression Report II, Clinical Portfolio and Service Evaluation Preliminary Reports
  • This module builds on the knowledge acquired in module one to enable students to carry out an independent research project and to write an advanced report on their findings, in addition, the students will have to prepare and deliver presentations at a research event.
  • Students are required to start their clinical portfolio and service evaluation, which will be developed and presented in subsequent modules.
  • The students are given training on relevant clinical laboratory methodology.
  • Their individual study time will be guided by the formal study sessions, but they are encouraged to be self-directed learners and engage with relevant sources including research papers and online resources to manage the independent study required for the research modules throughout their studies.

Year 2

  • Module: Research III - Dissertation, Research Project Final Report, Service Evaluation Final Report, Clinical Portfolio Final
  • This is the final module in the program, in which the student's ability to conduct research projects on MID and the acquisition and development of advanced skills for service evaluation are assessed through a series of different assessments, including the completion of their dissertation, research projects and a service evaluation, with relevant clinical portfolio presentations.
