Degree Overview:
This program provides a credit-bearing training opportunity for academic clinical fellows and clinical lecturers in medicine and dentistry.
Objectives:
- Develop academic research skills in the framework of your busy clinical training program.
- Become familiar with the regulatory and ethical framework for clinical research.
- Learn how to design, conduct, and write up clinical studies.
- Develop key skills in statistical analysis, critical review, and research communication.
- Become independent researchers, able to conceive and conduct research projects.
- Meet the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and other funders' requirements for academic clinical fellows to undertake relevant training in research methodology.
Outline:
The program comprises two parts:
Part 1: Core modules (compulsory)
- Clinical study design
- Ethics and regulation in clinical research
- Data management and statistics
- Clinical research practice
Part 2: Elective modules (optional)
- Research from the literature
- Practical project
- Grant proposal
Assessment:
- Part 1 modules: Assessed by a mixture of written continuous assessments and may include an oral presentation.
- Part 2 modules: Assessed by a dissertation in a style specific to each of your chosen modules.
Teaching:
- Taught by external experts from the pharmaceutical industry, and the interdisciplinary nature of your learning will give you useful networking opportunities.
- Your relevant training in research methodology will meet the requirements of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and other funders.
Other:
- You will be required to critically review a research field and prepare dissertations requiring insight and novel interpretation of material.
