Program Overview


City's MSci (Hons) Computer Science with Games Technology integrated-Masters degree will develop your technical, games-development skills, alongside providing you with a more general computer science education.

Who is it for?

This degree is suitable for those who want to apply their imagination to complex programming problems, while working in a creative, dynamic and successful area of British industry and are looking for a successful career in technical computing, with interests in the various roles directly and indirectly connected gaming and graphics.

You should be motivated to understand how computer games are built and excited by the rapid pace of change in the field.

Objectives

City’s Computer Science with Games Technology MSci (Hons) course focuses on developing your expertise in software and programming before giving you the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge of game engine architectures, computer graphics and game design, including the specialist skills needed for building computer game software.

As a student on this course, you will have to opportunity to:

  • Acquire leading-edge computer games programming expertise
  • Become proficient in a broad range of programming languages and software design techniques
  • Develop commercially valuable skills in computing laboratories
  • Work with research groups.

Assessment

Assessment is by examination and coursework although some components, such as the team project, are assessed by coursework alone.

Written examinations contain theoretical questions, including mathematical aspects, as well as writing and analysing small amounts of code and short essays on the applications of computational techniques.

Coursework takes many forms, including programming, modelling, theoretical work and essays. In the Individual Project you will carry out an independent investigation of a significant computing problem, applying knowledge and skills that you have learnt through the programme.

Feedback will be provided in line with our Assessment and Feedback Policy. In particular, you will normally be provided with feedback within three weeks of the submission deadline or assessment date. For end-of-module examinations or an equivalent significant task (e.g. an end-of-module project), feedback will normally be provided within four weeks. The timescale for feedback on final-year projects may be longer.

In your first year you must also complete an online risk and safety assessment to progress to stage two of the programme.
