Program Overview
Merchandising, an option in the apparel, merchandising, and textiles major, provides students with a unique perspective on the competitive, consumer-driven marketplace. A foundation in textile and apparel product knowledge and business fundamentals is combined with a focus on forecasting and interpreting consumer demand. The internationalization of producing and marketing fashion-oriented products is emphasized.
There is a strong business orientation in this option and courses in economics, accounting, marketing, and statistics are required. Departmental courses in the study of product development, sourcing, production, marketing, and retailing of consumer goods are included in the curriculum. The program encompasses global study of the cultural, historical, economic, and scientific aspects of the textile and apparel industry, while fostering understanding of consumer behavior and socially responsible business practices.
