Program Overview
The BSc Archaeology uses the principles of biology, chemistry and physics to investigate all aspects of the human past integrating scientific methods with anthropological and social theory. You’ll take specialist modules that incorporate the natural sciences and gain practical experience as you learn how scientific approaches are applied to the investigation of global human developments and interpreting the human past. You will complete an original science-based research project, working closely with your supervisor to develop your project from the second year.The Department of Archaeology at Sheffield has a reputation for world-leading research and teaching in archaeology; we are in the top 50 archaeology departments in the world (QS World rankings 2019). Our research-led teaching draws directly on the work of our inspirational academics who are experts in the specialist fields of bioarcheology, medieval archaeology, cultural materials, funerary archaeology, Mediterranean archaeology and landscape archaeology. Our cutting-edge laboratory facilities, purpose-built in 2017, house extensive bioarchaeological research collections and modern experimental equipment used in our research and teaching.You will undertake a minimum of six weeks practical experience, either in the field, the laboratory or the workplace. This experience, combined with your key archaeological skills, will equip you for a professional career in archaeology or the heritage sector.
