Program Overview

The University of Plymouth Peninsula Medical School (PMS) Medicine with Foundation Year welcomes students who are not eligible to apply directly to the 5-year BMBS Medicine and Surgery programme but have a strong desire to make a real difference to the care of tomorrow’s patients. For instance: we welcome your application if you are not predicted to achieve AAB grades at A-level but attend a school or college whose A-level results are below average for state-funded schools or you have other circumstances that have had a significant impact on your education. We also actively welcome your application if you are a Refugee, Care Leaver, Romany, Gypsy or from a travelling community and if you are an International student who can demonstrate disadvantage and are in receipt of a bursary from your Country of Residence. Upon achieving a minimum of 60% pass mark on the Medicine with Foundation Year Programme, you will be fully equipped with the skills and confidence to study on our existing forward-thinking 5-year BMBS degree. Having been with us for a year you will be familiar with the way we teach, the staff, and being at a university. In addition, the acclaimed BMBS and University of Plymouth student support structures will ensure that you are well supported in academic and pastoral contexts. The foundation programme also offers you the opportunity to study close to home, a small bursary and time provision/work incorporation to help alleviate the financial barrier to accessing Higher Education and Medicine in particular. Our curriculum encompasses an innovative, holistic approach to enable currently under-represented students to succeed and contribute to a medical profession that is truly representative of the diverse society, which it cares for. The programme incorporates joint biomedical science teaching modules and inter-professional study opportunities in collaboration with School of Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences. This will help you to develop an understanding of basic biomedical science required for success on the 5-year BMBS programme and of the broad spectrum of medical services and how they interlink across the NHS.The programme will also introduce you to important aspects of social science, study skills and humanities. Through these, you will develop an understanding of the broader needs of the Clinicians and their patients. Study units will introduce you to medical ethics and how this links to medical law. In addition, you will undertake studies on the health of the broader population and consider how these studies are used to predict public health care needs.Throughout the programme, you will develop your confidence, effectiveness in an academic setting, and communication skills enabling you to progress and contribute fully to the 5 year BMBS programme.
