Program Outline

Degree Overview:

International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS)

This program equips individuals to become excellent teachers by:

  • Providing them with the knowledge and skills to meet the professional requirements of the International Teachers' Standards.
  • Enabling them to engage in relevant academic skills and deepen their knowledge and understanding of educational policy and practice.
  • Encouraging them to develop reflective practice and adopt an inquiry-based approach to high standards and excellence in teaching and learning.

Objectives:

  • To prepare individuals for a rewarding career as a teacher.
  • To equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to positively impact the lives of children.
  • To develop graduates into leaders of learning.

Program Description:

  • The iQTS is suitable for both new and in-service teachers seeking professional qualification and recognition.
  • Participants can train to teach in their home country, without the need to visit the UK.
  • The program is based on the international Teacher Standards and the high-quality QTS standard, but acknowledges the value of context in international settings.
  • The course focuses on developing deep learning and wisdom, linking knowledge, skill, and understanding to the development of educators and the young people they teach.
  • The iQTS program does not currently include a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), but prepares graduates for master's level study, including the MA Education.

Other:

  • The program is offered online.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to communicate across cultures and draw on diverse perspectives to link theory with research, policy, and practice in education development.

Assessment:

  • Participants' teaching practice will be formatively assessed throughout the course by their school-based mentor and Link Tutor at the university.
  • This includes observed teaching online and assessed practice.
  • A range of tasks and approaches will be used to evaluate knowledge, skills, and understanding.
  • These may include written reflections, videos, images, presentations, and relevant documents from practice.
  • Assessment is progressive, building evidence of progress throughout an e-portfolio.
  • The final assessment is a presentation demonstrating the achievement of the International Teachers' Standards.
  • The program also includes assessment of fundamental maths and English skills.

Teaching:

  • Participants will be taught by expert, supportive tutors through various activities, including group seminars, lectures, tutorials, workshops, and online sessions.
  • They will be assigned a Link Tutor from the university and a school-based mentor to support their personalized progression through placement.
  • The program encourages the examination of teaching practice to further develop participants as reflective, confident, and successful teachers.

Careers:

  • The iQTS may enhance promotion prospects and allow graduates to teach in other countries.
  • Upon successful completion, graduates will achieve iQTS and QTS to teach in England with no further fees or training.
  • They may also consider continuing on to master's programs to support the development of their specialist knowledge and skills.

Other:

  • The program is offered in collaboration with the Department for Education.
  • Canterbury Christ Church University was one of just six providers selected by the DfE to deliver the innovative iQTS pilot from September 2022.
