Study Abroad in Florence, Italy

The Florence Institute of Design International offers a semester-long study abroad program for undergraduate credit. The program is designed for students enrolled in their second or third year of a design program, with consent from their department chair.

Program Details

• Semester Length: 15 weeks
• Start Dates: September or January
• Language: English
• Tuition Costs: Available on the study abroad application form
• Accreditation: The Florence Institute is accredited through the Region of Tuscany (Accreditation n. FI0531)

Objectives

• Gain significant cross-cultural benefits by expanding knowledge and appreciation of Italian/European society
• Develop design concepts to modern day problems integrated into the city context
• Develop an understanding and working knowledge to meet specific client needs, including additional requirements of Italian/European populations
• Research, graphic communication, written/oral presentation, appropriate materials, finishes, and furnishings for the presentation of design solutions

Requirements

• Students should be at least 18 years of age
• Students enrolled in their 2nd or 3rd year and have consent of their department chair may study abroad with us
• Students need to submit most recent transcripts with their application

Course Approval Form

• Students should contact us for a full course listing to be completed by the director at their current university and submitted together with their application

Graphic Design Semester

• Language: English
• Start dates: January or August
• Duration: 15 weeks
• The purpose of the Graphic Design semester abroad course teaches information on advanced graphic design techniques, focusing on typically Italian and European graphic design.

Interior Design Semester

• Language: English
• Start dates: January or August
• Duration: 15 weeks
• The Interior Design semester abroad gives students the opportunity to study Italian design in one of the world’s centers of creativity, focusing on typically Italian and European interior design.

Architecture - Semester

• Language: English
• Start dates: January or August
• Duration: 15 weeks
• The objective of the architecture semester abroad is to develop an understanding of how to design spaces and buildings within the context of an urban environment, specifically within the physical and historical context of Florence.

Industrial Design Semester

• Language: English
• Start dates: January or August
• Duration: 15 weeks
• The Industrial Design semester abroad gives students the opportunity to learn Italian furniture and lighting design in one of the world’s centers of creativity, focusing on typically Italian and European Industrial design.
