Master of Arts in Translation (MAT) Program
The Master of Arts in Translation (MAT) program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a successful career in the translation industry or the Creative Industries. The program combines rigorous translation training with a well-rounded education in translation theory, helping students acquire the analytical and technical skills, as well as linguistic and cultural competence, required of professional translators.
Program Structure
The program requires the completion of 10 courses plus a thesis to earn the Master of Arts in Translation (MAT) or a Master of Arts in Translation with a specialization in the Creative Industries. The duration of the program is 12 months (full-time) or 16 months (part-time). An academic year includes two semesters, each semester running for 15 weeks. Successful completion of the MAT program requires a total of 33 credits: Core Curriculum (30 credits / 10 courses) and Thesis (3 credits).
What You'll Learn
Upon completing the Master of Arts in Translation, students should be able to:
- Successfully translate texts of different genres, taking into consideration major theoretical issues involved in the process of translation
- Successfully apply strategies for translating different types of texts, varying in register, style, and domain, i.e., Legal, Business, EU, Technical, Audiovisual, Computer-assisted, and Creative Industries Translation
- Translate texts that consider larger issues in multilingual and multicultural societies
- Be adequately prepared to engage in doctoral-level studies
Research and Hands-On Learning
The MAT program offers students opportunities to participate in ongoing faculty-student research projects and provides a consistent hands-on approach to using tools such as translation memories, computer-assisted translation, audiovisual software, and terminology management systems.
Admissions Requirements
In addition to the required documents for admission, candidates applying for the Master of Arts in Translation (MAT) must also submit evidence of English Language Proficiency or Greek Language Proficiency (for non-Greek citizens).
Certifications
The Master of Arts in Translation (MAT) participates in the University Partnership Program with SDL Technologies and has been granted free access to the Memsource Academic Edition, an academic program designed for universities with translation courses.
Career Paths
As a graduate of the program, students can acquire the credentials needed to begin a career in the fields of translation, audiovisual translation, and editing. They can specialize in the Creative Industries and dynamically enter the world of audiovisual translation, gaming localization, or translation for museums or advertising companies. Graduates can reasonably expect to be employed as freelance or in-house translators in translation agencies, multinational companies, law firms, both in the public and private sector.
