This unit explores the nature and dynamics of intercultural communication and the role of written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills in intercultural communicational encounters. This exploration and discussion raises awareness of culturally diverse thinking and learning styles, cross-cultural perspectives on communication and language, in particular the different cultural framings of the media.

In this unit you will develop the knowledge and skills to understand the basic concepts of media theory, analyse a range of media texts and know why different media platforms have been constructed in a particular way. The interactive lectures provide a broad overview of social media, its impact on traditional media and explores the internet, the dark web, and the hidden dangers lurking in your internet footprint. The unit also looks at the future directions the web might take, how it might impact on the way you use it, communicate through and perceive it and how your experience of life online might be different in five years’ time. Students will have an opportunity to design and develop an online presence for themselves, which might be a blog, a website, a wiki or another form of site.
