Why take this course?

As a Music and Sound Engineering (M.A.S.E) student, you will be involved in a wide range of industry- specific assignments and practical work across this unique four-year programme, which encompasses all aspects of sound engineering, instrument technology, and other creative professional development studies that are necessities for work in the creative industry.

Our programme consists of three academic pillars that work together in harmony to give each of our graduates the best possible outcome for their professional career in the creative industry:

  • Pillar 1 - Sound Engineering: Recording Studio Sound, Live Sound, Music Production, Sound for Film & TV, Video Game Audio, Audio Programming, Radio Broadcast, podcasting, and Foley.
  • Pillar 2 – Instrument Technology: Woodworking Basics, Mandolin Build, Acoustic Guitar Build, Electric Guitar Build, Acoustic Treatment Builds, Digital Audio, Audio Electronics, and Interactive Audio.
  • Pillar 3 – Professional Development: Creative Industry Work Experience, Communications, Music Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Event Management, Website Creation, Photography, Videography, and Audio-Visual Composition.

This diversity aims to give graduates of the programme a range of real skills and the flexibility required to work within a highly competitive creative industry and on completion of the programme, you will have assembled an impressive portfolio of industry-related work to take forward into your career. M.A.S.E students have unrivalled access to industry standard equipment and software in state-of-the-art facilities based in one of Ireland’s most prestigious Technological Universities, right in the heart of Ireland.

Being a musician is not a programme pre-requisite, so M.A.S.E is suitable for all candidates.

What will I experience?

Over the course of this programme you will:

  • Work with industry standard software, computing, and studio & live audio equipment in a variety of dynamic practical assignments in state-of-the-art facilities.
  • Collaborate with Graphic Design, Animation and Illustration students, as well as working with creative industry professionals.
  • Create instruments and acoustic treatment solutions from raw materials, as well as design brand new virtual and interactive instruments.
  • Get to grips with the core professional development concepts required to work in the professional
  • creative industry.
  • Have the opportunity to ideate a bespoke capstone project that you will get to exhibit at the end of the programme to peers and visiting creative industry professionals.

What opportunities might it lead to?

Working in the highly competitive professional creative industry requires graduates to have a very driven attitude and to most likely have a ‘blended income portfolio’ i.e. to have several different revenue streams from different work within the creative industry.

It is not an industry that seeks out qualified individuals, rather it is the individual that must seek the opportunity out. It is the drive and determination to identify and take these opportunities that the M.A.S.E programme aims to instill in all graduates. On completion of the programme, you will have experienced the required practical and theoretical knowledge to be able to apply yourself to the positions below:

  • Recording Studio Assistant Sound Engineer
  • Assistant Live Sound Engineer
  • Assistant Broadcast Sound Engineer for Radio & TV
