Overview

The Italian program at the University at Buffalo (UB) offers students the opportunity to master the language spoken by more than 60 million people around the globe. The program is designed to immerse students in the language and culture of Italy, with small, engaging language courses taught in Italian from the start.

What Will I Learn?

• Study various aspects of Italian life throughout history, from Roman architecture and Renaissance art to modern film and fashion.
• Learn about other Romance languages and cultures that share common origins and characteristics.
• Develop skills in pronunciation, grammar, and cultural awareness.

Opportunities Outside of Class

• Spend at least a semester taking classes in Rome, Florence, Milan, or another city in Italy.
• Participate in internships, including tutoring international students in local schools.
• Collaborate with faculty on research projects.
• Join student clubs, including language groups.
• Attend film screenings, conversation tables, and other events.

Career Paths

• Academia and education: Teach at a school or university, advise international students, or help develop educational materials.
• International development: Promote human rights, gender justice, and other important issues worldwide.
• Medicine and health care: Help people live healthier lives with a career in global public health.
• Publishing and translation: Become an interpreter or media specialist, or work for a publisher or immigration agency.
• Industry, research, and consultation: Serve as a diplomat, promote tourism, or work in international trade.
