Nursing Program

Overview

The University at Buffalo (UB) offers a comprehensive nursing program designed to prepare students for a career in nursing. The program is tailored to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to succeed in the ever-evolving healthcare system.

What will I learn?

As a nursing student at UB, you will gain a broad education in clinical nursing, starting with science-based coursework in chemistry and anatomy. You will then progress to upper-level classes that focus on specific diseases throughout a patient's lifespan. The program includes hands-on training with lifelike patient simulators, preparing you to handle emergency situations, and real-world practice in clinical settings. The concept-based curriculum enables you to apply lessons from the classroom to different settings, for patients at various stages of wellness or illness.

What can I do outside of class?

As a nursing student, you will have opportunities to:

  • Service learning: Care for underserved populations in Buffalo and throughout the U.S., at mobile medical centers in impoverished areas and in disaster relief efforts.
  • Global opportunities: Participate in trips to help patients and gain a global perspective in countries such as Haiti, Ghana, and many others.
  • Clinical experience: Engage in rotations at a Level 1 Trauma Center, a world-renowned cancer center, or other clinical sites.
  • Student groups: Build lifelong friendships and professional connections through student organizations.
  • Research: Contribute to advancing knowledge in areas such as LGBTQ health, sleep apnea, oncology, and many more.

What can I do with a nursing degree?

A bachelor's degree in nursing from UB opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities. Our alumni work in nearly every specialty, hold senior leadership positions in healthcare networks, and conduct research to improve patient care. With a nursing degree, you can pursue careers in direct patient care, case management, administration, research, pharmaceutical sales, or teaching.

Who will I learn from?

At UB, you will learn from experienced leaders and recognized expert clinical practitioners in their specialties. Our faculty are active researchers, collaborative colleagues, and dedicated teachers and mentors. They have received prestigious awards, such as the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and have been elected to office in the American Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
