Program Overview


This part-time Diploma in Business Studies from Dublin Business School is designed to provide students with the practical skills and knowledge necessary for success in a fast-paced business environment. The program covers various key areas in business, including business functions, economics, accounting, marketing, information technology, human resource management, business law, and principles of management. Upon completion, students will be equipped with the skills to work in a range of business functions and the tools to progress in their careers.

Program Outline

Business Functions: This subject will introduce the student to the complexity of modern business organisational structures and give the student a sound knowledge of the major functions and service activities within a business. Topics covered include Business Strategy and Lifecycle, Business Plan Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Productions and Operations. It will also help to build students’ awareness of problems and challenges that the modern business might encounter.

Economics: This module is designed to give the student an excellent grounding in the fundamentals and functions of economics in today’s business environment. This module covers a wide range of topics from supply and demand theory to national and international trade issues. A large part of this module focuses on national banking, inflation, income, unemployment and fiscal issues.

Accounting: The fundamental aim of this subject is to introduce the student to the basic principles of financial and management accounting. The programme will enable the student to develop basic skills in respect of recording, summarising and interpreting accounts.

Marketing, Communications and Digital Media: This module explores the skills and knowledge necessary for the planning and management of effective marketing communications. This module is designed to provide students with an foundational understanding of marketing, its tools and associated digital skills. Students will gain an understanding of sales management within marketing, communications and digital media. Specially, how important it is for marketing professionals to measure conversion rates to measure effectiveness and justify marketing spend.

Information Technology Applications: This module will equip learners with practical digital skills. Learners will gain an understanding of collaborative technologies in the workplace. They will apply best practice for File Management, storage and security. Learners will build key digital skills for business in current software tools such as Word Processing, Spreadsheets and cloud storage systems.

Human Resource Management: Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the role of the Human Resource Department within an organisation. In addition to broadening the understanding of employee engagement, diversity in the workplace,  human resource planning and development, the role of Human Resource Information Systems, payroll and GDPR compliance will be covered.

Business law: This module will provide participants with an overview of the Irish Courts System and the Irish Constitution. It includes an introduction, together with a broad approach to EU Law. The Law of Contract, Tort Law, Employment Law and Intellectual Property are also introduced together with Consumer Protection Legislation. Company Law outlining the role of Directors, Sole Traders and Liquidators are also included in this Module.

Principles of Management: The Principles of Management module aims to provide students with a comprehensive review of management functions and practical management skills. The module explains the aspects of contemporary management and details the most important elements of management, including leadership, people management, change management and ethics.

Structure

The Diploma in Business Studies is offered as a part-time programme over one academic year. Students will engage with weekly topic areas through short, faculty led presentations, lab work and guided discussion that will be reinforced by case studies and group work. Moodle will be used to facilitate student engagement with resources, as well as provide an interactive space for learners. Learners will develop an array of transferable skills key to the business environment, including report writing, presentations, problem solving, teamworking.

 

Career Opportunities 

On completion of this programme students will have the knowledge and skills to work in a variety of positions which require knowledge in the areas of business, administration, and accounting/finance or business research.

Progression to DBS Programmes
