Degree Overview:

The International Human Resource Management MA is a one-year, full-time program accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD). It focuses on the unique challenges of international HRM, including cultural, legal, and economic differences, as well as remote relationship building. The program emphasizes a problem-based approach to teaching, applying learned concepts to real-world management problems through assignments and projects. It draws on current HR issues, case studies, and real-world examples, sometimes addressing students' own workplace experiences. The program aims to develop evidence-based HRM skills, including data collection, analysis, and the ability to identify, evaluate, and propose appropriate solutions. It covers topics such as expatriate employment, employee engagement, managing change, and reward management. The program consists of seven core modules and one optional module.

Core Modules:

Behaviour, Culture and Change: This module explores the relationship between culture, organizational behavior, leadership, and change management.
Global Employment Relations: This module provides an introduction to employment relations across the globe, examining similarities and differences among national systems.
HRM Research Project: This module develops research skills in evidence-based critical academic and practitioner HRM research.
Human Resource Management and the Business Context: This module explores the influence of the business context on organizations, management, and performance.
People Practice: This module explores people resourcing and enhances resourcing skills.
Skills of the Manager/Consultant: This module develops skills sets in relation to the CIPD Profession Map and the behaviors identified as core to those working in human resource management.

Designing and Delivering Training: This module investigates how organizations apply theory and research into training events.
Employee Relations and Employee Engagement: This module encourages students to develop and critically reflect upon the aims and objectives of employee relations policies from different theoretical, ethical, and behavioral perspectives.
Learning for Career Development: This module explores different theories of learning and development relevant to career planning and progression.
Managing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace: This module explores the structure and implications of difference and inequality within the employment relationship.
Organizational Analysis, Design and Development: This module uses concepts and modes of analysis from the social and behavioral sciences to develop a mastery of both practical and theoretical issues in the study of organizations and their development.
Reward Management: This module focuses on the study of reward strategies, policies, and practices in the context of the UK and globally.
The Psychology of Assessment and Selection: This module focuses on key theories, research, debate, and application of selection and assessment.

Assessment:

Students are assessed through a variety of methods, including coursework in the form of essays, reports, presentations, case studies, time-constrained in-class tests, and exams. Assessments are designed to be practical and relevant, incorporating the type of work required by future employers.

Teaching:

The program uses a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, case study analysis, and projects. It encourages active, experiential, and reflective learning. The emphasis in the classroom is on problem-based learning, blending theory and practice, problem diagnosis, and the selection of managerial tools to provide the best fit with the situation. Classes are often run on a workshop basis, giving students the opportunity to pool their experience and draw on the expertise of the tutors. Skills-based workshops include finance, introduction to employment law, interviewing skills, disciplinary and grievance handling, and negotiating skills. Students also benefit from practical knowledge, expertise, and valuable insights from visiting HR professionals from a wide range of industries. The teaching team has specialist HR knowledge in employee coaching, employment law, international HRM, management development, managing culture and change, and reward management. The annual HRM Conference brings together expert practitioners and academics who address a range of HRM-related topics.

Careers:

Graduates of the program are prepared for a wide range of business management opportunities, potentially working locally, nationally, and trans-nationally for global corporations, trans-European, trans-Asian, African, or Australasian companies. They can pursue careers in management consultancy, general HRM, expatriate HRM, or organizational development. Past students have gone on to become consultants (internal and external), HR managers, compensation and benefits managers, change management specialists, HR business partners/operations managers, civil servants, and mediators.

The program is designed to provide both a practical and theoretical understanding of people management approaches and their impact on organizational behavior.
