Arabic Intermediate
Overview
The Arabic Intermediate course is designed for students who have a solid intermediate knowledge of the Arabic language and its grammar. The course is made up of three parts, each building on the previous one, and covers various topics and grammar.
Who is this class for?
This course is suitable for students who have studied Arabic for around three years or 180 hours and can communicate confidently and fluently in most everyday situations.
Course Structure
The course is divided into three parts:
- Part One: For students who have studied Arabic for around three years or 180 hours.
- Part Two: For students who have completed Part One or have studied Arabic for about 200 hours.
- Part Three: For students who have completed Parts One and Two or have studied Arabic for about 220 hours.
Teaching
The course follows a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language needed to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. The classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.
Learning Resources
The course uses the textbook "Mastering Arabic 2" throughout the three parts.
Part One
In Part One, students will cover the following topics and grammar:
- Topics:
- Clothes and colours
- Shopping at a clothes shop
- At a wedding party
- Education and training
- Talking about subjects in school and university
- Culture: clothes in Iraq and language in Algeria
- Grammar:
- Adjectives and colours
- Relative pronouns
- Doubled verbs
- Weak verbs
- Imperative verbs
- Used roots
- The jussive
Part Two
In Part Two, students will cover the following topics and grammar:
- Topics:
- News and media
- Broadcasting
- The King's speech
- Climate and the environment
- Holiday plans
- Talking about possibilities
- Culture: great manmade river in Libya and the life in the Gulf countries
- Grammar:
- Formal Arabic
- Grammatical cases on nouns and adjectives
- Comparisons
- Future negative verbs
- Verbal nouns
- Processes in the past
- Using إذا and إن to talk about future possibilities
Part Three
In Part Three, students will cover the following topics and grammar:
- Topics:
- Health and happiness
- The body parts
- Talking about illness
- At the pharmacy
- Asking and giving advice
- Art and cinema
- Culture: Arabic in Sudan and the writer Emile Habibi
- Grammar:
- Structures to give advice
- Past verbs
- Plurals
- Using قد with the past and present verb
- Comparisons between past and future

- Part Three: Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students’ interests.
- Learning Resources: We will use Mastering Arabic 2 throughout the course. However, please wait until the first session before buying your course book.

- Who is this class for?
- Joining the Course: You can join Part One, Two or Three of the course depending on your prior experience. If you’ve studied Arabic for around three years or 180 hours, you should start with Part One.
- Skipping Parts: You can skip Part One and proceed straight to joining Part Two or Three if you have prior experience. This course is currently closed.
- Online Courses - September Start: Standard Fee per Part: £290. The booking deadline is 10 days prior to the start date of each Part.
- On-campus Courses - October Start: Standard Fee per Part: £350. The booking deadline is 10 days prior to the start date of each Part.
