Dutch Beginners
Overview
The Dutch Beginners course is designed for individuals with little to no prior knowledge of the Dutch language. The course is divided into three parts, each building on the previous one, and covers various topics and grammar to help students communicate confidently in Dutch.
Course Structure
The course consists of three parts:
- Part One: For absolute beginners, covering personal introductions, cordial phrases, the alphabet, days of the week, numbers 1-100, countries, cities, nationalities, and languages.
- Part Two: Building on Part One, covering telling the time, months, dates, birthdays, all numbers, describing things and events, shopping and food, expressing likes and dislikes, and talking about daily routines and trips.
- Part Three: The final level, covering weather, idiomatic expressions, describing appearance, checking in at a hotel and airport, plans and intentions, and my house.
Teaching
The course follows a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on speaking and listening skills. Experienced language teachers, native speakers or equivalent, lead the classes.
Learning Resources
The course is based on the University's own materials. Students can join Part One, Two, or Three depending on their prior experience.

Program Outline
Outline:
The Dutch Beginners course is made up of three parts: Part One, Part Two, and Part Three. Each part builds on what you've learnt previously.
- Part One:
- Topics: Personal introductions, cordial phrases, the alphabet, days of the week, numbers 1–100, countries, cities, nationalities and languages, describing and introducing yourself and family members, request-type situations for shops, restaurants, at the station.
- Grammar: Verbs in the present tense, personal pronouns (ik, je, hij, zij, het, wij, zij), definite and indefinite articles (de, het, a, an een), basic adjectives (groot, klein, oud, duur), basic prepositions (in, met, van, tot, voor, na,), making simple questions with or without a question word, demonstrative pronouns (deze, dit, dat, deze, die).
- Part Two:
- Topics: Telling the time, months, dates, birthdays and related vocabulary, all numbers, including ordinal numbers, describing things and events, shopping and food, expressing likes and dislikes (hobbies), talking about your daily routine, talking about trips and travelling.
- Grammar: More verbs both regular and irregular (e.g. nemen, zien, ‘blijven), modal verbs (moeten, mogen, zullen, kunnen), future tense, separable verbs (opstaan, aankomen, terugkomen), word order (time–manner–place and inversion), imperative, subordinating clauses.
- Part Three: mijn, jouw, haar), negation, word order in relative clauses. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

- The course is based on the University of Westminster's own materials.
- You can join Part One, Two or Three of the course depending on your prior experience.
- The distribution of course content across terms may vary from year to year. This is due to the variable length of terms in different academic years. There may also be slight content variations at the discretion of the tutor. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students’ interests.
