Dutch Intermediate
Overview
Our Dutch Intermediate course is designed for students who have a solid intermediate knowledge of the Dutch language and its grammar. The course focuses on broadening vocabulary and improving reading and understanding of more complicated texts from sources such as newspapers. There is also a focus on writing and speaking, with every student being asked to do a presentation.
Who is this class for?
This class is for students who have a solid intermediate knowledge of the Dutch language and its grammar, and can communicate confidently and fluently in most everyday situations.
Course Structure
Our Dutch lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.
Learning Resources
We will use Nederlands in actie and the tutor’s own material throughout the course. We will also read a book of fiction (title to be confirmed). Please wait until the first session before buying your course book.
Part One
In Part One of the Dutch Intermediate course, you'll cover the following topics and grammar:
Topics
- texts on positive outlooks
- the bicycle and songs about it
- social media in society
- how to present in Dutch
Grammar
You will learn and revise:
- syntax: verbs, indirect objects and direct object
- more complex adjectives
- conjunctions
- the passive voice
Part Two
Part Two builds on what you learnt in Part One, covering the following topics and grammar:
Topics
- is the Netherlands really progressive?
- who was Calvin?
- Dutch culture
- expressing and asking for opinion - debating
Grammar
You will learn and revise:
- prepositional compounds
- reported speech
- irregular past tenses
- usage of ‘er’
Part Three
Part Three is the final level of the Dutch Intermediate course, and covers the following topics and grammar:
Topics
- current affairs
- sustainability
- influence of other languages on Dutch
- Dutch and Belgian inventions
Grammar
You will learn:
- idiomatic expressions;
- verbs and phrases with a fixed preposition
- relative pronouns
- the conditional

Our interactive online courses provide real-time lessons with an expert tutor to practise speaking and listening. You will benefit from live, face-to-face engagement with experienced language teachers in an online, virtual classroom.
On-Campus Courses
Our on-campus courses are held at our historic headquarters building at 309 Regent Street. This is a dedicated teaching building with purpose-designed facilities. Our location near Oxford Circus means we're right in the heart of central London, with excellent transport links.

Degree Overview:
This course is designed to help students improve their Dutch language skills for professional or personal reasons. It is aimed at students with a solid intermediate knowledge of the Dutch language and its grammar, who can communicate confidently and fluently in most everyday situations. The course focuses on broadening vocabulary, reading and understanding more complicated texts, and improving writing and speaking skills.
Outline:
The Dutch Intermediate course is divided into three parts:
- Part One: This part covers topics such as texts on positive outlooks, the bicycle and songs about it, social media in society, and how to present in Dutch. It also includes grammar topics such as syntax (verbs, indirect objects, and direct objects), more complex adjectives, conjunctions, and the passive voice.
- Part Two: This part builds on what was learned in Part One and covers topics such as whether the Netherlands is really progressive, who was Calvin, Dutch culture, and expressing and asking for opinions. It also includes grammar topics such as prepositional compounds, reported speech, irregular past tenses, and the usage of 'er'.
- Part Three: This part is the final level of the Dutch Intermediate course and covers topics such as current affairs, sustainability, the influence of other languages on Dutch, and Dutch and Belgian inventions. The evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.
Other:
- The course uses the textbook "Nederlands in actie" and the tutor's own material.
- Students will also read a book of fiction (title to be confirmed).
- Every student will be asked to do a presentation.
- The course is offered both online and on-campus.
- Online courses start in September and on-campus courses start in October.
- The course is currently closed for bookings, but students can register their interest and will be contacted when bookings re-open.
