Dutch Lower Intermediate

Overview

The Dutch Lower Intermediate course is designed for individuals who have a good basic knowledge of the Dutch language and its grammar. The course is divided into three parts, each building on the previous one, and covers various topics and grammar.


Who is this class for?

This course is suitable for individuals who have studied Dutch for around two years or 120 hours. It is also suitable for those who have completed Part One of the course or have studied Dutch for about 140 hours.


Course Structure

The course consists of three parts:


  • Part One: Covers topics such as jobs, traveling and living abroad, describing feelings, and talking about daily life. Grammar includes syntax, conjunctions, verbs in the present, past continuous and perfect tense, adjectives, prepositions, and separable verbs.
  • Part Two: Builds on Part One, covering topics such as relationships, education, Dutch and Belgian traditions, customs and culture, and expressing and asking for opinions. Grammar includes prepositional compounds, reported speech, relative pronouns, and the om te construction.
  • Part Three: Covers topics such as talking about plans and intentions, sports and leisure activities, social and political issues, and comparing systems. Grammar includes pronominal adverbs, idiomatic expressions, word order, and the passive.

Teaching

The course follows a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language needed to communicate in authentic situations. The classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.


Learning Resources

The course uses the textbook "Nederlands in Actie" and the tutor's own materials. Students will also read the novel "De verwarde cavia".

  • Part Two:
  • Topics:
  • Relationships, education, Dutch and Belgian traditions, customs and culture, expressing and asking for opinions, debating.
  • Grammar: Prepositional compounds (e.g.
  • achterin, bovenaan, tussenin), reported speech (e.g. Sofie zei dat Tom niet kon komen. ), relative pronouns (die/dat, wie/wat, wiens/wier), om te construction, usage of er.
  • Part Three:
  • Topics:
  • Talking about plans and intentions, sports and other leisure activities in Belgium and the Netherlands, social and political issues, comparing systems (e.g. healthcare, jobseeker’s allowance, elections) in your own country with the Dutch and Belgian ones.
  • Grammar: Pronominal adverbs (e.g.
  • waarmee, waarover), idiomatic expressions (Belgian Dutch versus Netherlandic Dutch differences), word order, the passive (e.g. De les wordt door de leraar gegeven.).
  • Learning Resources:
