Norwegian Beginners

Overview

The Norwegian Beginners course is designed for individuals with little to no prior knowledge of the Norwegian language. The course is divided into three parts, each building on the previous one, and covers various topics and grammar to help students communicate confidently in Norwegian.


Course Structure

The course consists of three parts:


  • Part One: For absolute beginners, covering personal introductions, greetings, the alphabet, spelling, and pronunciation.
  • Part Two: Building on Part One, covering topics such as telling the time, daily routines, work, and appointments.
  • Part Three: The final level, covering topics such as the weather, months, seasons, and climate.

Teaching Approach

The course follows a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on speaking and listening skills in authentic situations. Experienced language teachers, who are native speakers or equivalent, lead the classes.


Learning Resources

The course uses the På vei textbook, and students are advised to wait until the first session before purchasing the book.

    • The alphabet, spelling, and pronunciation
    • Talking about countries, languages, and professions

    • Meeting and inviting people, making arrangements, shopping in newsagents

    • Daily activities and items in the house, saying where items are placed
  • Grammar:
    • Personal pronouns, subject and object form
    • Verbs in present tense
    • Basic sentence structure, including inversion
    • Nouns – indefinite and definite form, singular and plural
    • Adverbs
    • Prepositions of place

Part Two

  • Topics:
    • Telling the time, daily routines, work, and appointments
    • Apologising
    • Ordering at a café and shopping for food
    • Holiday activities and travel in Norway, buying tickets
    • Maps, simple traffic rules, road signs
    • Asking about bus times, time, and distance
    • Shopping for clothes, talking about clothes, colors, prices, and sizes
  • Grammar:
    • Verbs in infinitive form
    • Modal verbs + infinitive
    • Reflexive pronouns
    • Verbs in past tense
    • Adjectives in indefinite form
    • Pronouns

Part Three

  • Topics:
    • The weather, months, seasons, and climate
    • Talking about clothing and what to wear
    • Holidays, celebrations, ceremonies, and traditions
    • Talking about your own beliefs and outlook on life
    • Going to parties and socialising
    • Reading recipes
  • Grammar:
    • Sentences with clauses

Outline:

The Norwegian Beginners course is made up of three parts: Part One, Part Two, and Part Three. Each part builds on what you've learnt previously.

  • Part One:
  • Topics:
  • Personal introductions, greetings, the alphabet, spelling and pronunciation (extra letters æ, ø, å), talking about countries, languages and professions, days of the week, numbers, meeting and inviting people, making arrangements, shopping in newsagents, family, food and meals, daily activities and items in the house, saying where items are placed.
  • Grammar: Personal pronouns, subject and object form (jeg, du, ham), verbs in present tense (forstår), basic sentence structure including inversion (Nå leser vi), nouns – indefinite and definite form, singular and plural (en gutt, gutten, gutter), adverbs (hit/her, dit/der), prepositions of place (på, i, mellom).
  • Part Two:
  • Grammar: Verbs in infinitive form (å lese), modal verbs + infinitive (vil lese), reflexive pronouns (meg, deg, seg), verbs in past tense (snakket), adjectives in indefinite form (en god bok, gode bøker), pronouns (denne/dette/disse, hvilken/hvilket/hvilke).
  • Part Three:
  • Grammar: Sentences with clauses (at, om), imperative (snakk!
  • ), adverb (derfor, fordi), interjection (jo), possessives (min, din, sin), adverb (godt, vel). Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.
