Program Overview


Course Overview

The Norwegian Elementary course is designed to help students extend their range of basic skills in Norwegian. The course is divided into three parts, each building on the previous one.


Who is this class for?

This level of Norwegian is post-beginner, allowing students to extend their range of basic skills. Students who have studied Norwegian for around a year or 60 hours should start with Part One. Those who have studied more than this may be able to join Part Two or Part Three directly.


Course Structure

The course follows a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language needed to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. The course is taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.


Learning Resources

The course uses the På Vei textbook. Students are advised to wait until the first session before buying the course book.


Part One

In Part One, students will cover the following topics and grammar:


Topics

  • Talking about experience and expectations
  • Spare time and hobbies
  • Culture
  • Writing an invitation
  • Expressing joy, sadness or longing
  • Health and nutrition
  • Describing pain

Grammar

  • Possessive pronouns (hans, hennes, deres, sin)
  • Present perfect (har malt)
  • Genitive (hans)
  • Prepositions for time (for to uker siden)
  • Ordinal numbers

Part Two

Part Two builds on what students learnt in Part One, covering the following topics and grammar:


Topics

  • Climate and nature
  • Describing an area
  • Inter-cultural relations
  • Living space, housing and furniture
  • Expressions for place
  • Talking about celebrations
  • Expressing positive and negative feelings

Grammar

  • Comparative and superlative adjectives (stor, større størst/big, bigger biggest)
  • Prepositions for place (I Oslo/på fjellet)
  • Quantifiers (mange og mye)
  • Relative pronoun (som)

Part Three

Part Three is the final level of the Norwegian Elementary course, covering the following topics and grammar:


Topics

  • Work
  • Giving and receiving messages
  • Education, childcare and school
  • Knowing about the relationship between parents and school
  • Expressing desire and uncertainty
  • Talking on the phone

Grammar

  • Primarily word order in subordinate clauses (da, når, før,) to express time
  • Subordinate clauses (hvis) to express condition
  • Adjectives in the definite form (den bilen/the car)
  • Compound nouns (klasserom/class room)
