Course Overview

The Swedish Beginners course is designed for individuals with little to no prior knowledge of the Swedish language. The course is divided into three parts, each building on the previous one, and covers various topics and grammar.


Who is this class for?

This course is suitable for beginners who want to learn Swedish for personal or professional reasons. It is ideal for those who have no prior knowledge of the language or have studied Swedish for about 20-40 hours.


Course Structure

The course consists of three parts, each with its own set of topics and grammar.


Part One

In Part One, students will cover the following topics and grammar:

    • Greetings
    • Countries and languages
    • Professions and family
    • Numbers
    • Time and daily routines
    • Instructions
  • Grammar:
    • The Swedish alphabet and pronunciation
    • Verbs in imperative and present tense
    • Cardinal numbers
    • Personal pronouns, subject position
    • Question words
    • Word order
    • Nouns – singular, indefinite and definite form

Part Two

Part Two builds on what students learned in Part One, covering the following topics and grammar:


  • Topics:
    • Shopping
    • Hobbies and interests
    • Entertainment
    • Films and television
    • Family, friends, and relatives
    • Famous people
  • Grammar:
    • Auxiliary verbs and verbs in infinitive and past tense
    • Nouns – plural, indefinite form
    • Adverbs for frequency
    • Adjectives, indefinite form
    • Personal pronouns, object form
    • Relative pronoun
    • Possessive pronouns

Part Three

Part Three is the final level of the Swedish Beginners course, covering the following topics and grammar:


  • Topics:
    • More on shopping
    • Clothes and colours
    • Travel and tourism
    • Weather and dates
    • Travel and transport
    • Directions
    • Sweden and the Swedes
  • Grammar:
    • Indefinite pronouns
    • Nouns – plural, definite form
    • Adjectives, comparative form
    • Verbs in supine
    • Numbers, ordinal
    • Adverbs for position and destination
    • Prepositions for past tense and future tense

Teaching and Learning Resources

The course will be taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of Swedish or equivalent. The teaching approach will focus on communicative language teaching, with an emphasis on speaking and listening. The course will use the textbook "Rivstart A1+A2" and the tutor's own materials.

  • Part 3: 22 April 2025 – 26 June 2025 (Tuesday-Thursday courses) (10 weeks)

Fees

The standard fee for each part is £300 for online courses and £365 for on-campus courses.

  • Shopping, hobbies and interests, entertainment, films and television, family, friends and relatives, famous people.
  • Grammar: Auxiliary verbs and verbs in infinitive and past tense, nouns – plural, indefinite form, adverbs for frequency, adjectives, indefinite form, personal pronouns, object form, relative pronoun, possessive pronouns.
  • Part Three:
  • Topics:
  • More on shopping, clothes and colours, travel and tourism, weather and dates, travel and transport, directions, Sweden and the Swedes.
  • Grammar: Indefinite pronouns, nouns – plural, definite form, adjectives, comparative form, verbs in supine, numbers, ordinal, adverbs for position and destination, prepositions for past tense and future tense.
  • Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.
