Program Overview

Who is this course designed for?

This course has been designed for delegates at all levels of experience and involvement with anaesthetising and monitoring critical and high risk patients. Whether you are actively and frequently involved with anaesthesia for critical patients, or are less familiar and wish to learn more, this course is perfect for you. This course will cover many of the common conditions and presentations encountered in practice, requiring urgent yet carefully planned anaesthesia. Through discussion of general concepts and specific conditions for each condition, the aim is to provide delegates with the knowledge and confidence to undertake these cases.

Course content:

The course covers the pharmacology of anaesthetic drugs, pre-, intra-, post- operative anaesthetic care, patient monitoring, emergency interventions and more. Conditions to be included:

• Caesarean section
• Haemo abdomen and acute haemorrhage
• Gastric dilatation volvulus
• Septic patients
• Pneumothorax/open thorax
• Head trauma

The physiology associated with the various conditions will discussed, and the implication on body systems and subsequently choices in anaesthetics. You will be familiar with the adverse effects of anaesthetic agents and how to minimise these. Knowledge of supportive treatments, equipment, and interventions will aid in maximising patient outcomes. Learning will be delivered through a mixture of case based discussion and interactive sessions.

• Fully utilise monitoring equipment and ancillary equipment

• Understand the effects of the conditions on the body
• Apply the principles of local anaesthetic drugs and associated techniques
• Identify indications for each technique
• Be able to achieve and administer local anaesthetic blocks (within their legal remit)
