Program Overview
Soil Management and Cultivations
This course is part of a recognised Higher Education Level 7 module that can become part of a Postgraduate Award including a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma and a Masters Award.
This course will allow work-based postgraduate students to develop high level problem solving skills while advancing specific technical knowledge. Students will learn through a range of approaches including taught sessions, practical sessions and through problem solving activities to enable them to develop into advanced practitioners.
This course will be applicable particularly to the potato sector and professionals in crop science e.g. senior agronomists.
Course Objectives
- Identify different soil types and relate their physical properties to appropriate tillage management for potato production.
- Prepare management plans which minimise soil damage and the soil erosion risk within potato production systems.
- Plan and review potato field management systems to effectively minimise or control run-off, drainage, diffuse and point source pollution.
- Formulate appropriate nutrient management plans for crop rotations that include potatoes.
