Advanced Management of Minor Injuries

Overview

This is a level 7 (master's level) stand-alone module. The aim of the module is for the student to gain advanced knowledge and skills to be able to autonomously assess, examine, diagnose and manage patients attending care settings with minor injuries.


Full Description

The content covered during the module includes assessment and management of injuries involving upper and lower limbs, wounds, eyes, and facial/head injuries in both adults and children. X-ray requesting and interpretation will be covered. The teaching will focus on the importance of history taking and assessment in relation to achieving appropriate diagnosis and safe, evidence-based management.


Each week of module is dedicated to a specific anatomical group (i.e. week 2: Shoulder injuries, week 3: Elbow and forearm etc.) to provide in depth learning opportunities. During the module the student will work in their appropriate clinical area and be supervised by clinicians dealing with minor injuries.


Assessment

The summative assessment elements of the module include Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and a Practice Assessment Document (PAD).

Entry Requirements

  • You’ve been a registered nurse for two years and have been working for at least six months in a first contact, emergency or urgent care setting.
  • You'll have a first class degree, or equivalent, and must be recommended for this course by your manager.
  • Your clinical practice placement must be supported by an appropriately experienced/qualified advanced practitioner, agreed in advance by your manager and the course tutor.
