Program Overview


This Master's in English Literature explores Shakespeare's works, the social changes of the 19th century, and 20th and 21st-century literature. Students develop research skills through a core module and can choose an Independent Learning Module or a module from the MA Creative Writing course. Assessment includes essays, presentations, and a dissertation.

Outline:

You will consider the context of the social changes at work in his era and in the following centuries. You’ll also examine key cultural contexts, such as gender, race, politics and power, as well as re-appropriations of his work including prequels and sequels in fiction and drama. Social and political change will also provide the framework for your analysis of literature from the 20th and 21st centuries. This is your opportunity to explore in depth a topic that reflects your academic interest.

Assessment:

Assessment includes a combination of essays, critical reviews and presentations, as well as a 15,000-word dissertation. You can get advice on essay writing at consultation workshops which are built into the course.
