The Fundamentals of Practice Nursing (General Practice Nurse Foundation Programme) is a course designed for qualified nurses or nursing associates new to Practice Nursing or with less than a year of experience in General Practice. The course aims to provide the fundamental skills necessary to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-based care to patients.
Full Description
The education and development of the practice nurse workforce is a key priority in healthcare. This module provides a foundation for registered nurses who have been in general practice for less than a year to deliver safe, evidence-based, and effective care for patients and work as part of the primary health care team.
A professional career framework is required for nurses entering General Practice, and this module represents the cornerstone upon which foundations can be laid. NHS values-based care and the "6C's" will be core themes running throughout this module.
Topics will include:
- The principles of safe clinical assessment
- Minor illness
- Managing long-term conditions
- Wound care
- Sexual health
- Immunisation and vaccination
- Mental health awareness, including dementia care
Who Should Attend?
You'll be a qualified nurse, new to General Practice or with less than a year of experience.
You'll be a registered nursing associate, working in General Practice and having a suitable mentor in that practice.
Please note: This module has a practice component; you'll need to be working in a GP practice and have an experienced practice nurse to act as a mentor, who will support you in meeting the competencies in the practice portfolio you will submit for assessment.

Please note: In addition to the study dates below, you'll be required to attend two consecutive days for the Cervical Screening workshop, dates to be confirmed by the tutor. The dates below are a mixture of face-to-face days and online sessions. Further details will be available upon enrolment.
