Introduction

Further your professional development as a teacher or lecturer in higher education. Reinforce your practice with theory to have a greater impact on teaching and learning in the sector.

Teaching times

  • Tuesdays 6-7pm

With the needs of the 21st century classroom and learners constantly changing, our PG Cert Learning and Teaching in Higher Education will ensure you learn the necessary knowledge and skills to progress in your career.

You’ll learn how to use reflective practice to consider the impact of your teaching on student learning, drawing on relevant theoretical models of learning as well as your own experience as a teacher and learner.

You’ll focus on developing practical teaching skills such as teaching in large and small groups, using technology to support learning, and developing courses based on the principle of constructive alignment – the idea that learners construct meaning from what they do to learn, and that teachers should make a deliberate alignment between learning activities and outcomes.

Through our Canvas learning management system, you’ll have access to a wide range of teaching and learning resources, but you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to engage with other students too.

Please note that in order to meet the course requirements you must currently be teaching and supporting learning and assessment in the higher education sector, both when you apply and throughout the course.

This course does not contain Fellowship of Advance FE (FHEA). For more information about this, or if you work for the NHS or teach ARU students, please contact to discuss your options.

Our PG Cert Learning and Teaching in Higher Education course will introduce you to the knowledge and skills needed to plan, deliver and evaluate learning.

You'll take two modules on the course, both of which include a compulsory teaching observation. You'll learn how to use reflective practice to consider the impact of your teaching on student learning, drawing on relevant theoretical models of learning as well as your own experience as a teacher and learner.

You'll focus on developing practical teaching skills such as teaching in large and small groups, using technology to support learning, and developing courses based on the principle of constructive alignment.

You’ll also explore theoretical frameworks relating to formative assessment, feedback and feed-forward as ways of promoting learning, and develop skills in using these to help you devise assessment criteria that can be used to assess your own work.

Modules are subject to change and availability.
