Machinery Mechanics

Overview

Learn more about the routine maintenance and repair of machines, tractors and equipment used in grounds care and associated industries. Study for one day per week over 15 weeks, at Writtle College.


Full Description

Our practical-based training focuses on routine service, specific repairs and fault diagnosis. It will offer you the ability to reduce servicing costs and machinery down time. It's also a valuable opportunity to develop skills in routine maintenance and repair.


To make sure the training is appropriate and cost-effective we encourage you, with prior arrangement, to work on your own equipment and components.


Topics Covered

  • Day 1 - Tools, equipment, engine diagnostic, service administration, Health and Safety
  • Day 2 - Multi Cylinder Diesel Engine
  • Day 3 - 4 Stroke Petrol Engine
  • Day 4 - Mechanical transmission systems
  • Day 5 - Basic MIG and Arc Welding
  • Day 6 - Hydraulics
  • Day 7 - Electrics - Start and charge
  • Day 8 - Mechanical transmission of power (belts, chains, shafts etc)
  • Day 9 - Cylinder Mower Cutting Unit - In season settings and repair
  • Day 10 - Cutting Unit Overhaul (Cylinder, Rotary or Flail)
  • Day 11 - Cutting Unit Overhaul Continued (note; where cutting units are not required by the candidate, weeks 10 and 11 may be used to develop other areas within the course criteria, i.e. electrics, hydraulics etc)
  • Day 12 - 2 Stroke Engines and Hand-Held Machines
  • Day 13 - Electrics, Lighting and Control
  • Day 14 - Skills Application Day - Small Machinery
  • Day 15 - Skills Application Day - Self Propelled Machinery
