Program Overview

Mentoring for Initial Teacher Training

Overview

Preparing for the new Department for Education statutory requirements for lead mentors from September 2024? Develop your skills for mentoring trainees in Initial Teacher Training and supporting Initial Teacher Education, as well as Early Career Teachers’ professional development. This course will allow you to enhance the connections between their academic and professional lives, as well as your own.

Full Description

Through face-to-face workshops, online activities and supplementary reading, together we will cover everything that trainees need to know about pupil learning, how your trainees can be supported to manage and assess their own learning; and how you can help them develop professional behaviours for a successful career in teaching.

You will undertake professional development aligning to your professional practice as a mentor, embedding evidence-based practice into your day-to-day mentoring using a range of teaching approaches, including simulated learning.

You will also learn to reflect on the impact that mentoring has on your trainees, including how to plan for and implement opportunities that allow trainees to develop their professional knowledge and skills in Early Years, Primary or Secondary classrooms.

The course is organised into five areas that are key to mentor development:

  • Supporting Teaching
  • Designing and Structuring Learning and Assessment
  • Developing Career-long learning
  • Delivering ITT
  • Implementation of ITT in Practice

Each of these areas deals with an important aspect of mentoring trainee teachers. You will not only need to engage with these topics, but also consider your own professional experience as a teacher and mentor in relation to them.

The course materials you use will take a holistic view of both the learning that ITT trainees need to undertake in their QTS courses, and the learning that you as a mentor need to undertake in order to support them, aligning with the National Professional Qualification for Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD).

You can study this module on its own but it also bears 60 credits towards a Masters degree in Education at ARU.

Who Should Attend?

We will prioritise applications from those who are an identified lead mentor at ARU or one of its ITT partners, or mentoring a trainee on a course of initial teacher education provided by ARU or any of its partner organisations who also provide initial teacher education/QTS courses.

In line with the new mentor requirements as part of the Initial Teacher Training statutory guidance from the Department for Education from September 2024, you will be required to demonstrate your commitment to meeting the time requirement of 30 hours of study in order to be eligible for ‘lead mentor’ status at ARU.

You must also have the support of your school (employer) to reflect on your practice as a mentor. You will need access to expert colleagues in your school to discuss your practice with, and your school will need to sign a supplementary information form granting you permission to take the course.

Dates

Study for 24 weeks over two trimesters from September 2024 – April 2025.
