About Program

Program Overview

This program combines theory and practice, focusing on health and developmental reviews for children and families. Students develop skills in assessing vulnerability and risk, refining research skills, and developing leadership qualities. Graduates qualify as specialist community public health nurses and may pursue careers in community health, school nursing, or other public health roles.

Program Outline

Outline:

  • The program combines theory and practice, with one to two days each week on campus in Cambridge, and one to three days out on placement.
  • Students will learn about the key issues relating to health and developmental reviews for 0-19 year-olds.
  • Students will also develop their skills and knowledge in assessing and managing vulnerability and risk to children, adults, families, and communities.
  • Students will refine their research skills by finding the latest research relating to SCPHN, critically reviewing it, systematically evaluating it, and applying it in their practice.
  • Students will develop as leaders, with a particular focus on advocating effectively on behalf of children and families and commissioning services.
  • Students will consolidate their learning by spending ten weeks putting it into practice at work and reflecting on their experiences of doing so.

Careers:

  • Graduates will be qualified to work as specialist community public health nurses and be eligible for part three NMC registration.
  • Graduates may work in the community, promoting the health of children and families; or as a school nurse.
  • Graduates may also work in the wider field of public health, for example, in community development work.
  • Graduates may also use their new research and leadership skills, and knowledge and understanding of policy, in other roles in public health, safeguarding, and primary care and community agencies.
