Special and Transitional Care of the Newborn

Overview

Critically analyse, appraise and evaluate the concept of neonatal special and transitional care and the needs of the infant and their family in a holistic manner.

Full Description

With increased knowledge, skills and understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the newborn, you can contribute with more confidence and awareness to their clinical nursing care.

Using a critical approach to contemporary evidence, you’ll consider and analyse nursing and medical interventions that may be used in your clinical setting to ascertain appropriateness, effectiveness and best practice.

In your own area of work, you’ll hone your skills in patient assessment and interventions with a focus on family integrated care. You’ll be encouraged to review the provision of special and transitional care in the light of supporting evidence, and to critically reflect on current practice.

Outline Content

• Family centred approaches to the care of the newborn in the hospital setting
• The environment of special/transitional care as well as paediatric assessment or children’s inpatient unit
• Embryological development
• Normal physiology of the newborn
• The effects of underdevelopment altered physiology and pathophysiology on normal neonatal physiology
• Assessment of the infant in the special/ transitional care or relevant children’s setting
• Care / interventions to maintain physiological homeostasis
• Critical reflection on current practice
• Critical review and analysis of literature for provision of evidence informed practice

Who Should Attend?

Our module will suit registered nurses and midwifes working in a relevant field.

Entry Requirements

To join this course you'll be a registered nurse or midwife working in a relevant setting where you are required to undertake assessments and interventions for the newborn, with the appropriate experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level 7.
