Course Overview
The BSc in Applied Software Engineering is an innovative and flexible way for individuals to gain a degree in Software Engineering whilst in employment. The course is open only to employees of regional companies and organisations. The programme is 3-years long, where each year consists of three trimesters. Lectures and labs are delivered on campus every Wednesday from 1pm-8pm.
The programme has been designed with the support of an industrial advisory panel in order to meet existing skills gaps in industry. It covers the full breadth of Software Engineering, combining traditional academic teaching with work-based learning. 25% of the assessment is based on transferring academic knowledge to the workplace.

Modules
The BSc in Applied Software Engineering is a 3-year programme where each year consists of three trimesters. Lectures and labs are delivered on campus every Wednesday from 1pm-8pm.
Taught Modules
Each trimester consists of two taught modules worth 20 credits each. Taught modules are typically assessed with a combination of lab work, coursework and two class tests (a Mid-Term Test and End-Term Test). The pass mark for every module is 40%. At the end of each trimester, students will be offered the opportunity to redeem any failed modules (i.e., a module with a mark of less than 40%) from the current trimester.
Work-Based Modules
In addition to the taught modules, a Work-Based Portfolio module runs throughout each of the first two academic years. These are core modules and must be passed. Each taught module contains a Work-Based Portfolio task where the knowledge acquired from that module is put into practice in the workplace. The marks achieved in these tasks are evaluated as a whole to deduce whether a student has passed or failed the module.
The work-based tasks are completed in the student's own time. In the final year, a 40-credit work-based Project module runs through the whole academic year. This is also a core module, and includes the specification, development and implementation of a substantial software project.

Entry Requirements
As a work-based learning programme, we value the experience of applicants as well as formal qualifications such as A-Levels. Formally, the entry requirements are the same as our traditional BSc Software Engineering (G600) programme. However, we recognise relevant experience in the case of mature students who do not have adequate A levels or equivalent academic results, and the expectation is that such recognition will be made in the case of the majority of applicants to the programme. We look at each applicant on a case by case basis. If you are unsure or think you do not meet the entry requirements, then please get in touch and we can discuss your situation.
Non-UK/Irish applicants holding a non-settlement, temporary visa (i.e. one that has an expiry date) must ensure they have the correct immigration permissions to work and study for the duration of the course. The BSc course involves work-based learning, therefore immigration permissions must include the ability to work full time. Sponsorship under the Student Route will not be possible because the course structure and delivery does not meet the necessary UKVI criteria for such sponsorship.
Tuition Fees
The course is fully funded, subject to confirmation from MEDR, which covers the full course tuition fees. This is also subject to the student meeting the funding criteria.
