Degree Overview:

This degree is designed for serving Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) within the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust. The program aims to equip students with the essential skills, knowledge, and attributes necessary to become Registered Paramedics. The curriculum covers anatomy and physiology, major body systems and their conditions, patient assessment, life-threatening condition identification, and life support administration. Students will also develop an understanding of the role and relevance of research, patient care concepts, and legal and ethical principles in healthcare. The program is supported by the Health and Care Professions Council, allowing graduates to apply for registered status upon completion, which is a legal requirement for practicing as a paramedic. The program is ranked 2nd in the UK for Paramedic Science by The Guardian (2024).

Teaching:

The program is delivered through a combination of in-person and online learning. Practical skills, lab work, and workshops primarily take place in person, while theoretical concepts are supplemented with online resources. Teaching is conducted by the Paramedic Sciences team, as well as specialist lecturers.

Careers:

Most graduates pursue clinical roles within the National Health Service (NHS) or the private sector. The NHS starting salary for Registered Paramedics is approximately £28,407, with potential for additional unsocial hours payments. Private sector salaries may be higher depending on the setting.

The fees for this programme are currently covered by the Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW). This means you do not have to pay fees. You will remain in the paid employment of WAST, in accordance with WAST’s Human Resources policies. Travel and accommodation expenses may be negotiated with your employer.
