Program Overview

The Swansea University Schools' Partnership (SUSP) PGCE program prepares future Chemistry teachers with the skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on pupils in Wales. The program combines research-informed reflective practice with professional practice, leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and employment opportunities as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Swansea University Schools' Partnership (SUSP/PYPA) is an innovative collaboration between school and university staff dedicated to training "Tomorrow's Teachers" with the skills and experience necessary to make a positive impact on pupils in Wales. The program aims to develop confident and knowledgeable Chemistry teachers who are equipped to contribute to the learning communities they join. SUSP's PGCE program is underpinned by regional, national, and international research, providing students with the tools to make Chemistry meaningful, interesting, and fun while also analyzing their own and their pupils' progress. The rigorous and integrated PGCE program challenges students academically and professionally.

Outline:

The SUSP ITE program comprises two modules: Research-informed Reflective Practice (EDPM30):

  • Core Studies: Focuses on the overarching issues driving policies within the Welsh cultural context.
  • Subject Studies: Emphasizes pedagogy in your subject area, lesson planning, and understanding your subject's place in the Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLE).
  • Subject Knowledge Enhancement: Reviews curriculum requirements in your subject area and prepares you for topics you may teach.
  • Professional and Pedagogical Studies: Explores the implications of your subject area on whole school issues such as provision for children with additional learning needs, differentiation, and assessment.
  • Research Methods in Education: Focuses on research methodologies suitable for educational purposes and prepares you for your close-to-practice research project.
  • Professional Practice (EDP300):
  • Ensures that all student teachers develop a deep understanding of how the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership link to the Four Purposes of the new Curriculum for Wales.
  • Leads to the recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Provides opportunities for employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) in schools.

Assessment:

EDPM30 Research-informed reflective practice:

Critical reflection on lesson plans: Students submit subject-specific lesson plans with a focus on a school-wide issue, along with a critical reflection on the effectiveness of learning activities. Close-to-practice research project report: Students identify a research question linked to a school-wide issue and conduct a small-scale research project to improve pupil engagement. Critical reflection on classroom management: Students identify an area of classroom management to improve, record themselves teaching, and critically reflect on strategies employed.

EDP300 Professional Practice:

Students gather evidence against each of the 32 QTS level descriptors set out in the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership in Wales using the EWC Professional Learning Passport (PLP). Students write 5 short reflective essays linking to the 5 Professional Standard section headings and a longer reflective essay discussing the relationship of the 5 strands to the values and dispositions identified in the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership.

Teaching:

The SUSP ITE program is designed to provide multiple opportunities for students to address the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership through rich learning experiences that support professional proficiency. The program draws upon the University's considerable academic expertise in Chemistry and provides high-quality, practitioner, and research-led ITE premised on the principle of integrated learning.

Careers:

Successful completion of the SUSP PGCE leads to recommendation to the Education Workforce Council for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and provides opportunities for employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) in schools.
