Program Overview

History is the study of change and continuity over time. It is a broad and dynamic social sciences discipline that involves examination, interpretation, and analysis of the actions, institutions, societies, and cultures of diverse groups across various times and places. By examining cause and effect, History helps us explain how societies in the past and present came to be and gives us insight into what may happen in the future.

The History program at Cañada offers students a unique opportunity to acquire critical and historical thinking skills while also developing a broad background in both U.S. history and the history of different regions and peoples of the world.

Requirements

AA Degree Requirements Major: Core and Selective Requirements

Complete Core Courses (6 units):

• HIST 201: U.S. History through 1877 (3 units)
• HIST 202: U.S. History from 1877 to the Present (3 units)

Selective Courses (minimum 12 units)

Choose from the following courses:

List A (complete 6 units):

• HIST 100: History of Western Civilization I (3 units)
• OR
• HIST 104: World History I (3 units)
• HIST 101: History of Western Civilization II (3 units)
• OR
• HIST 106: World History II (3 units)

List B (complete 6 units):

• Select any courses from List A not already used (3-6 units)
• HIST 245: Race, Ethnicity and Immigration in the U.S. (3 units)
• HIST 246: History of Latinos in the U.S. (3 units)
• HIST 247: Women in U.S. History (3 units)
• HIST 422: Modern Latin America (3 units)

Total Required Major Units: 18

And required General Education coursework and electives as needed to meet the minimum 60 units required for the Associate degree.
