Entry Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements

• Must have completed a Master's degree with honors or a Bachelor's degree with honors (equivalent to 4 years of study) in a specialization appropriate to the proposed research
• The degree must have a standard equivalent to first class or second class (first division) honors
• The degree should include advanced learning in research, execution of a research project, and a written report on the research
• A minimum of five years' professional experience in the specific area of study

English Language Requirements

• IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with 7.0 in Writing and no band less than 6.0

Application Process

1. Initial Meeting: Candidates are expected to meet with the Programme Leader to discuss the suitability of the program and to organize a supervisor.
2. Application: Apply to gain entry to the program, providing a current CV and transcripts showing evidence of postgraduate qualifications and research capability.
3. Research Proposal: Work with the supervisor to develop and gain approval for the research proposal.
4. Approval: Once the research proposal, qualifications, and practice experience have been approved by the faculty, the application is sent to the Graduate Research School for approval and to issue an Offer of Place.

Coursework and Thesis

• Students need to complete three courses (HEAL910, HEAL911, and HEAL912) over three semesters (part-time), followed by a thesis component.
• The thesis should be completed within two years full-time or four years part-time.

Practice as a Health Professional

Practice as a health professional in New Zealand is governed by legislation and several 'Responsible Authorities'. Overseas qualified health professionals who wish to practice in New Zealand should communicate directly with the relevant Responsible Authority. Qualifications recognized for professional registration at AUT are undergraduate; study at the postgraduate level is not considered equivalent recognition for NZ Board certification.
