Program Overview

Centennial College's Biotechnology Fast-Track program allows college graduates to earn a diploma in one year, preparing them for laboratory technician roles in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. The program emphasizes practical training in microbiology and chemistry, with a focus on laboratory techniques and project-based learning. Graduates can pursue careers as laboratory technicians, research and development technicians, and quality control analysts, among others.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

Centennial College's Biotechnology Fast-Track program is designed for qualified college or university graduates who wish to attain a diploma within one year (two semesters). Students gain direct entry into the second year (third semester) of the two-year Biotechnology program, equipping them to work as laboratory technicians in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. The program emphasizes practical training in microbiology and chemistry (analytical, organic, and biochemistry), with a focus on laboratory techniques such as aseptic practices and safety procedures. A unique aspect of the diploma program is its project-focused approach, featuring independently designed microbiology projects to enhance problem-solving and research skills. Upon completion of the program, students develop the following competencies:

  • Isolating, enumerating, and identifying microorganisms from various samples (water, soil, air, the human body, food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products)
  • Preparing specimens for staining and developing expertise in light microscopy
  • Proficiency in aseptic handling of materials
  • Accuracy in calibrating and using instruments (pH meters, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, and centrifuges)
  • Preparing microbiological media and reagents, and culturing pathogenic microbes
  • Designing and executing independent microbiology experiments
  • Utilizing microorganisms to assess pharmaceutical products
  • Students have the option to graduate as biotechnician in one year or continue for a second year to study specialized topics in microbial genetics, systematic microbiology, and environmental microbiology, leading to an Advanced Biotechnology diploma.
