Program Overview
The Bilingual Extension program certifies teachers in New York State to teach English Language Learners (ELLs) in bilingual settings. The program develops expertise in bilingual education theories, multicultural perspectives, and pedagogical skills for teaching English and native language arts, as well as other content areas. Upon completion, candidates can provide tailored instruction that supports ELLs' language acquisition and academic success.

The Bilingual Extension program offers certification for candidates already certified to teach in New York State and who seek to teach English Language Learners (ELLs) in a bilingual setting. Upon completing this program, candidates can instruct students learning English as a second language while providing tailored instruction that goes beyond what an English-only speaker can offer.
Objectives:
- Develop expertise in major theories of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism
- Cultivate multicultural perspectives and sensitivity to English language learners from varying backgrounds
- Acquire pedagogical skills to teach English language arts, native language arts, and other content areas in a bilingual setting
- Develop linguistic knowledge of language as a complex system of language acquisition, as well as in-depth understanding of second language acquisition theories and research

Language Proficiency Requirements:
- You must be proficient in English and in another language used for instruction in NYS public schools. These include: French Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Urdu.
