Program Overview
This practical bricklaying course equips students with essential skills and knowledge for a career as a bricklayer, blocklayer, or paver. Through hands-on training and industry simulations, students learn to use tools and equipment, construct various structures, and adhere to safety protocols. The program is designed for working apprentices with access to a live worksite and provides a pathway to a trade outcome in the construction industry.

This practical course covers all the essential skills and knowledge needed to work as a bricklayer, blocklayer or paver. Graduates will have gained knowledge and skills in:
- Levelling laying bricks and blocks
- General demolition
- Veneer construction
- Structural masonry
- Arch design and construction
- Fireplace construction Students will learn to safely use and maintain a wide range of tools and equipment used for bricklaying and construction, including:
- Power tools
- Automatic and laser levels
- Cement mixers
- Generators
- Scaffolding
- Conveyor belts This course is delivered on campus in a flexible way that fits in with a modern working environment with online content and workplace simulations. To be eligible for this course, applicants must be currently working in the industry as a bricklayer apprentice, with access to a live worksite.
Teaching:
Students will learn in multi-million dollar trades facilities at the Sunshine Campus. The ‘Construction Futures’ hub is a sustainable training facility with a six-star Green rating. It provides modern high-tech labs and dynamic workshops including:
- Concrete laboratory
- Survey laboratory
- Engine laboratory
- Soldering/construction laboratories
- Power systems laboratory
- Computer workstations with simulation and modelling software Students will also benefit from:

Careers:
This qualification provides a trade outcome in Bricklaying and Blocklaying in both housing and commercial construction. Occupational titles may include:
- Bricklayers who lay bricks, pre-cut stone, concrete blocks and other types of building blocks in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures
- Blocklayers who lay concrete blocks and other types of building blocks, bricks and pre-cut stone in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures

Entry requirements:
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. In order to enter this course at VU Polytechnic, students must be employed as a full time apprentice. They must have a training contract with their employer. This contract must be registered with the VRQA, and the apprentice must have been issued with an Epsilon number. As part of the application process, applicants must complete a Pre-training Review (PTR) and undertake a literacy and numeracy (LN) assessment to determine suitability for admission. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.
