Computer-Aided Drafting, Certificate of Competency draft
Program Overview
This Computer-Aided Drafting program equips students with the skills to use CAD tools for 2D and 3D design modeling. It offers two tracks: a basic 2D option for blueprint reading and construction, and a 3D parametric modeling option for advanced software features and mechanical/manufacturing applications. The program prepares students for careers as computer-aided drafters in industries such as engineering, manufacturing, architecture, and construction.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This program, Computer-Aided Drafting (Certificate of Competency), is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to manage computer systems for drawing production, information storage and retrieval, and communication in the engineering and design workplace. As students progress through the program, they will explore applications in manufacturing, mechanical and architectural engineering, and construction. The program is particularly suitable for individuals with previous experience as manual drafters who seek to enhance their skills with computer-aided drafting tools. However, it is also accessible to those with no prior technical experience seeking an introductory understanding of engineering drafting and design principles. Students can choose between two tracks: a basic 2D option with an emphasis on elementary blueprint reading and construction applications or a 3D parametric modeling option with a focus on advanced software features and mechanical/manufacturing applications.
Objectives:
- Develop proficiency in using computer-aided drafting (CAD) tools to create two- and three-dimensional technical design models and drawings that effectively communicate design solutions.
- Apply the principles of descriptive geometry and graphic construction techniques to the CAD process to accurately document design intent.
- Utilize CAD tools to generate plane and 3D geometric forms and employ object viewing techniques to present design concepts clearly and effectively.
- Execute working, multiview, assembly, and 3D model drawings using CAD tools and techniques.
Outline:
The program consists of three semesters, with a total of 15 credit hours. The first semester focuses on foundational concepts, including CADD Graphics (TCC 112), 2-D CADD (TCC 122), and Construction Blueprint Reading (TCS 100) or Architectural Graphics I (ARC 121).
Careers:
The program prepares students for careers as computer-aided drafters, where they can utilize their skills in various industries, including engineering, manufacturing, architecture, and construction. Graduates may find employment as drafters, design engineers, or technical illustrators.
