Gas Technician 2

Overview

The Gas Technician 2 program is designed to provide students with additional knowledge in code requirements, propane fundamentals, system testing, and troubleshooting. This two-semester program focuses on specialized studies in the fields of natural gas and propane, with a core curriculum standardized and accredited by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).


Admission Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or Mature Student Status
  • Grade 12 English (C or U)
  • Grade 12 Mathematics (C, M or U)
  • Valid Oil Burner 3 license or proof of 75 per cent or higher on the Oil Burner 3 practical evaluation

Pre-Placement Requirements

  • Students enrolled without a valid Gas Technician 3 license will not be permitted to participate in work placement and will be unable to challenge the Gas Technician 2 TSSA exam.
  • Students enrolled without a valid Oil Burner 3 license will be unable to challenge the Oil Burner 2 TSSA exam.

  3. Apply knowledge of the properties and characteristics of natural gas and propane to promote safe handling, combustion, and appliance efficiency.
  4. Interpret installation codes, acts, and regulations to ensure personal and public safety.
  5. Interpret technical manuals, specifications, schematics, drawings, and graphs by applying basic electrical theory and knowledge of supply wiring.
  6. Complete the installation, removal, servicing, and maintenance of piping and tubing systems, gas powered appliances, gas meters, pressure regulators, relief valves, conversion burners, heaters and heating systems in a manner that meets all relevant codes and regulations.
  7. Apply customer relations skills to maximize customer satisfaction and job effectiveness.

Field Placement Or Capstone Project

  • After successfully obtaining a Gas Technician 3 license through the TSSA, students will participate in a field placement that begins in October and runs one full day a week for the first and second semesters.
