The Medical Assistant program is designed to prepare students as multi-skilled health care professionals who can function as assistants to physicians and other health professionals in a variety of ambulatory care settings. Responsibilities include administrative and clinical duties. Upon successful completion of the required program with a 2.5 GPA and a "C" or better in all allied health courses (AHM and AHA), students will earn an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Medical Assistant. Students may initially complete the Certificate of Proficiency (CMED) program.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:
- Apply knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology to understand body systems and disease processes.
- Perform administrative and clinical tasks as a medical assistant, supporting physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Understand ethical and legal issues in the medical assistant profession.
- Communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare professionals to provide patient care in an outpatient setting.
- Apply clinical reasoning skills to accurately screen patients with acute and chronic diseases in a clinical setting.
- Prepare and administer medications safely and accurately.
- Identify issues and practices relevant to health information, including electronic health records.
